Ain't no pressure...in the AC

Right in the middle of the Idaho desert the compressor of our air
conditioning stopped working. It was approaching the end of its
lifecycle anyway and had to fail at some point. We knew that before we
started the trip (it would make a noise indicating that it had
enough), but we hoped it would survive the trip. It didn't, so we
switched to windows-down air cooling.

A day before, in Idaho Falls, we had a scheduled oil change. The
really vital systems of the car still operate flawless. Only the
catatalytic converter keeps surprising us. Since the first smoky signs
of trouble in the Black Hills, WY, we clocked many miles in the
mountains and crossed numerous passes and most of the times the cat
worked fine, even though we switched back to engine braking on
descents. Sometimes though, usually unexpectedly, we see smoke coming
from the cat. But that's ok, better to deal with a known issue than
solve new puzzles.
